We cannot overemphasise the peace that
greeted the general elections in Nigeria – as being the handwork of God.
We believe, strongly, that Muhammadu
Buhari’s victory at the poll was the wish of the Almighty God. “Therefore submit yourselves to every
ordinance of man for the Lord's sake, whether to the king as supreme, or to
governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and
for the praise of those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing
good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men —as free, yet not using liberty as a cloak for
vice, but as bondservants of God. Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear
God. Honor the king.” 1 Peter 2:13-17, NKJV.
To this end, we are reminding the
president-elect that there is a mandate upon him. A mandate to do the needful
that the populace have been clamouring for: people’s hope have been dashed
(times without number), but there is an opportunity mixed with curiosity,
because an incumbent government had been unseated by an opposition party.
The mandate upon the president-elect
While God recognises General Buhari’s rise
to power: He loves and wishes that the president-elect does the right thing in
His sight. “He who walks uprightly, And
works righteousness, And speaks the truth in his heart; He who does not
backbite with his tongue, Nor does evil to his neighbor, Nor does he take up a
reproach against his friend; In whose eyes a vile person is despised, But he
honors those who fear the LORD; He who swears to his own hurt and does not
change; He who does not put out his money at usury, Nor does he take a bribe
against the innocent. He who does these things shall never be moved”. Ps
15:2-5, NKJV.
The president-elect must not, at all, take
the expectations of the people for granted. As he also knows – the expectations
are just too high.
All that the people require
For the past 16 years, Nigerians have
experienced failed promises from most of their political representatives: those
16 years, at the national level – were under the administration of the Peoples
Democratic Party led-government administration. This is, however, not to say
that the PDP led-administrations have not brought good fortunes to the people,
as a whole, but there are mirages beyond comfort.
Therefore, Buhari should not relax until he fulfils his campaign promises: he should be mindful of the people’s heartaches,
and deliver timely succour to the masses.
1.The people clamour for stable electricity.
2.The people clamour for sanity in government
institutions.
3.The people clamour for equality, before the
law, of all Nigerians.
4.The people clamour for good roads.
5.Standard healthcare services.
6.Improved and stable economy.
7.Rule of law.
8.Purging the government institutions of
corruption.
9.Safety of lives and properties.
10.Access to quality education.
While this is not a time for political
haunting of any oppositions, it is a time for sanitary (within the four walls of
Nigerian government institutions).
Everyone that has his or hands in the
rottenness of the nation’s system must be made to face the wrath of the law.
It is better to die for a good course than
to be a celebrity in injustices. Hence, the president-elect should not be cowed
by any person or group of people from delivering the people’s mandate.
The masses are dreaming of a Nigeria that
is organised: a Nigeria in which the poorest could pursue a promising future
and achieve his or her set goals. Therefore, it is our prayer that good health,
knowledge, and power (the more) be granted to the president-elect.
As he is sworn in on May 29, 2015, may his
tenure bring lasting solutions to all the problems that have plagued our great
nation, Nigeria.
